Dark Sky Community
In the heart of Outback Queensland, a new kind of tourism is taking shape — one that looks up.
Diamantina Shire is embarking on an ambitious journey to become a certified Dark Sky Community, joining a global network of destinations dedicated to protecting the natural night. With vast open horizons, almost zero light pollution, and some of the clearest skies in Australia, the region is perfectly positioned to lead the way in astrotourism and sustainability.
Imagine standing beneath the Milky Way so vivid it feels close enough to touch, or capturing constellations that have guided travellers and storytellers for millennia. In Diamantina, the night isn’t just dark — it’s alive with light from the stars above.
To make this vision a reality, Diamantina Shire Council has begun installing light monitors across the region — the first step toward formal Dark Sky accreditation. The project aims to preserve the purity of the Outback night while creating new opportunities for visitors to connect with it through stargazing tours, astrophotography, Indigenous sky stories, and science-based experiences.
By protecting its night skies, Diamantina is shaping a brighter future — one that celebrates both the wonder of the cosmos and the spirit of the Outback.
Diamantina: where the night is darker, the stars are brighter, and the adventure stretches to infinity.
