Our remote communities love receiving visitors, and a few basic steps to prepare for your trip will help you have a fun and safe time in our region.
4WD and AWD vehicles are highly recommended for travel to most parts of the Diamantina. This is because many of our roads are unsealed, and if wet or corrugated, present difficulties for low clearance 2WD vehicles. 4WD, high clearance vehicles are the most suitable option if you plan on driving the Birdsville Track, Munga-Thirri National Park and similar tracks and trails. Flying
Rex Airlines travels twice weekly to Birdsville and Bedourie from Brisbane, and twice weekly from Mt Isa.

Driving
The three main roads entering the region are the Diamantina Developmental Road (from Windorah and the east) to Bedourie or then onto the Birdsville Developmental Road to Birdsville, the Eyre Developmental Road (from the north) and the Birdsville Track (from the south).
REMEMBER TO ALWAYS CHECK ROAD CONDITIONS BEFORE TRAVELLING, AND TAKE ENOUGH FOOD AND WATER FOR THE JOURNEY.

Please note there are no hire car companies in the Diamantina. Hire cars can be found at Mt Isa, Charleville and Longreach. If considering travelling in a hire car or rented camper to the region, insist on knowing if the insurance is valid if travelling roads in this region. Some hire car insurances are void if travelling roads such as the Birdsville Track.
